Let me say right off the bat that my use of the word ‘quantum’ does not pretend to great scientific knowledge of Quantum Physics. I have a very common or popular idea of what this means. It is one more image or metaphor that helps me understand the world.
When my website was being created with the help and support of my web goddess, Carolyn Winter (http://lighttravels.com/) she suggested that I ought to have a kind of signature which we could use on the home page. I had recently taught a workshop in which I used this term to help explain how I believe astrology works. Given that synchronicity seems to be a by-product of quantum leaps it seemed like the perfect fit.
One of the big questions of astrology for many people is about an astrologer’s ability to predict the future. This happens successfully more often than non-astrologers might think. I am always delighted when people tell me that my insights into their chart have been spot on. I think it impresses me as much as it impresses them!
I believe that we have an unlimited amount of possible futures. Given that we (astrologers) are in the business of helping people navigate what lies ahead this may sound like a cop out. I can’t with unfailing, consistent accuracy tell a client when they will marry or divorce, if they will win the lottery or when their parents are going to die. I don’t even want to do this.
The past is done. It is what it is and it cannot be changed. The future is non-existent. In fact both the past and the future exist only in the mind. The present however is actually what is happening; what is always happening. This notion that the present is the only reality is sort of basic mystical belief 101. (I read once, that the present is actually only 12 ½ seconds long, which makes this notion even more fascinating. I have no idea if this is an actual fact but the thought that the present has a measurable time factor suggests that the brain might classify anything that happened 12 ½ seconds ago as the past which is food for thought.)
How astrology fits in is that if you are willing to be in the present then you can use it to reflect on the moment with great insight. This insight can set you free of old patterns and therefore open up some of those unlimited possible futures. Most of us are unconsciously aimed at a future that our reaction to the past has, more or less, predetermined.
For example, if I am interpreting a chart and make a judgment that the client is a person who is abundantly creative but frightened of expression, based on planets in the 5th house (including Pluto), I may infer that s/he often misses out on opportunities to express herself for fear that no one will notice. On account of that she may feel life is passing her by.
If I can show that person in this moment, the moment of the astrology reading, how that shapes the choices s/he makes s/he may be able to make other choices; choices that would use this very same energy in a different way. That is about as good as it gets in the free will department.
People generally want to blame accidents on something. We spend a lot of time in the ‘if only’ frame of mind. There are no accidents. Rather, things happen and then it is a human need and ability to give meaning to the experience so it can be understood in some context. But until you had that accident you potentially might have used that energy in a different way. Fate is really your past. The things you cannot change. Our job as astrologers is to help wake people up to their fate so they can live fully in the present thereby creating and meeting their destiny with awareness and full engagement.
On many levels I don’t really know what is actually happening when I am looking into someone’s future. I think of what I am seeing as insights – literally seeing into something. My sense is that I am dealing in energies or waves and when the wave collapses it becomes an event; equivalent to a particle in quantum terms. The client can recognize this as accurately foretold from my description of the energy or wave.
The image of energy condensing into matter is a perfect analogy for the power of words as they are used in an astrology reading. Our words convey a wisdom or description for someone to translate into actions that can help people live their lives more fully.
Astrology offers guidance. Astrologers interpret or translate pictures (planetary alignments) into words. I am often struck just before I start a reading of the absurdity that I am about to tell a perfect stranger about the experience they have of life. Each and every reading – especially at that moment – seems to require a quantum leap: Information (the wave) finding a home in experience (the particle).
So the next time you are wondering about what, exactly Quantum Astrology is think about the magic in words which are made of nothing and how they can change the nature of reality. Think about the gap between the words an astrologer speaks and the uses a client makes of those words. That gap is the quantum leap from a symbol written on a page to the reality of a life lived. Or as an old friend of mine used to say after a reading, ‘From your mouth to God’s ear’.
