Sun enters Libra: 09:55 PM EDT
What is Libra if not the moment of perfect balance between day and night? Like an angel dancing on the head of a pin or a time acrobat performing a fleeting moment of profound equilibrium, Libra asks us to consider these things. It teases the mind to compare the northern hemisphere to its opposite twin in the south. No matter which side of the equator you’re on, today is a day of equal day and night. But in the north, days will grow shorter even as they lengthen down under. But for that one precious moment we are all the same.
Don’t be fooled by Libra’s claim to equilibrium. Its greatest secret is that balance is only achieved via negotiation, debate and challenge: Diplomacy on a good day and war, if all else fails.
Mercury square Saturn
Work as hard at understanding as being understood. There is a rich world inside the mind but it can be very lonely in there.
September 24 & 25
Full Moon: 2 degrees of Aries: 10:52 PM EDT
Sun square Saturn
Mostly we hate being told what to do unless, of course, we ask for it Don’t wait to be told what you know you must do, it will only feel like a fight, a challenge, an imposition. Look at what calls you to duty: The laundry, the dishes, the deadline. Just do it. You won’t get your reward in heaven, you’ll get it right here, right now. The job well done rewards itself. At least it ought to.
Sun trine Mars
When you think of courage do you think of first responders? Protesters? Those who defy the odds? Mothers about to give birth? All these things and more require courage but for these particular times, so fraught with anxiety for ourselves, the children, the whales, in these times it is likely that some of the greatest courage is made of kindness that can bridge the gap between alienation and connection. Kindness toward oneself as well as others might just be the bravest choice.
Pluto stationery Direct
Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us to take one breath to let go, one to be here and one to ask, ‘Now what?’. He probably wasn’t thinking about the stations of Pluto but he could have been. Pluto may be the boss of the underworld but when we stop and listen to the drumbeat of life we are somehow transformed, renewed and returned into the light above ground.

It’s all too easy to talk ourselves into a funk. It’s harder to distinguish between rationalizations (such as, everything is fine) and honest attempts to be rational in a chaotic world. Truly rational people include their feelings in what they are trying to understand. Beauty can help us feel, to find the ‘fearful frontier between what we think makes us, and what we think makes the world.”
Venus stationery retrograde
The Goddess descends. The brightest light in the night sky after the Moon, the diamond hanging there in the west after sunset, begins her journey back toward the Sun. A reminder to us all that there are things we hold tightly, things that weigh us down and get in the way, that keep us from what really matters. Between now and the end of October is time to make peace and let go.
Mercury trine Uranus and Saturn
Sun opposite Neptune
Like August 25th when the Sun brought Saturn and Uranus together, now it’s Mercury’s turn. Problems can be solved. But it’s always wise to consider the difference between healing and curing. Look for sustainable solutions, remembering that as far as the soul is concerned, if it’s not beautiful, it’s not functional.
New Moon: 15 degrees Libra: 11:47 PM EDT
There is always something to be thankful for – from our most recent in breath and the precious life it sustains; maybe for the simple fact that we are here, now, together on this crazy, mixed up planet at the same time, for such a short time really and an intense one at that.
October 9 & 10
Mercury enters Scorpio
If astrology is a mirror – reflecting the moment – it’s showing us that we we could benefit from a bit of deep reflection. We would do well to dive down and stir things up. Nothing is as it seems and all bets are off. The only way to think about anything is outside the box and it’s a big old box, one we have taken for granted for thousands of years. A good time to read: 21 Lessons for the 21st Century… Or something like that!

Mercury sextile Saturn
We impale our possibilities on the stake of wishful thinking: The ‘if only’ syndrome. Our expectations of what would feel good are rarely satisfied for more than moments. Get radical, cut to the root and see what’s down there. Then learn something.
Mercury conjunct Venus (retrograde)
Sometimes there are some folks who are able to give voice to the journey, the joyful sorry, and the sorrowful joy of human experience. If you are one of them, get to work. In any case you might want to read about the Kingdom of Ordinary Time.
Mercury trine Neptune and square Mars
To actually speak truth to power requires a depth of feeling that touches the source of truth without solidifying it; without imposing it on others. For truth to be universal it must resonate, not convince or coerce. It’s the movement from truth to power not the content of the truth or even the doctrine of the power that matters. We are dancers not sentries: Quantum beings, not bricks in a foundation. The time has come to see ourselves as movement. To ‘be the change’ we must accept that we are, like everything else, are change itself.
Mercury sextile Pluto
Venus descends (vanishes from the night sky)
Sometimes courage demands we enter the burning building. Overcoming our fear of flames we rescue the helpless. Other times it’s about choosing to feel what lives in the depths; the allowing of memories to surface and feelings to be felt. Not to wallow in them but rather to hold these painful truths in our hands even as they evaporate, mixing invisibly with the air. Out of this kind of courage we make a world of value. Venus leaves our sight as evening star, making her mysterious journey to the Sun where she will be consumed and renewed. We can simply watch and wait for her return in early November. Or we can descend with her, shedding skins into which we no longer fit, releasing old feelings resentments, regrets and vengeances into the wild, where they belong; allowing them to find their true nature as we wait and see what changes in our own.

You may wonder why all the days of the month are not represented in this column and what I have done with the days that are missing. On those days there are no mutual aspects between the planets and the Sun or Moon. The wanderers give those days to the ‘wayfaring moon’ only. The Moon by sign and phase always carries the underlying mood of the moment with its fluctuating emotion.
