It’s a Mercury Retrograde month. If you need alignment you can get it here.
Sun enters Aries: 06:29 AM EDT
It’s not easy to push through, to resurrect, to get born again into this world. But it’s what happens every spring. As if called by a conductor of a massive symphony, all manner of seeds sprout through the cold, hard ground and push their way up into the sunlight which has finally surpassed the darkness in the length of time it claims in a day. It takes a particular kind of determination, will and courage to do what Aries does. These days Aries is troubled by climate change; things appearing out of season as well as the unexpected shocks and degradation of our biosphere. There is not much point in lamenting with Hamlet that:
The time is out of joint- O cursed spite,
That ever I was born to set it right!
Hamlet: Act 1, scene 5
It seems to me we are all here, together, at this very time because we are meant, each in some small way to set it right; or at least to witness that it needs resetting. If not in our lifetimes, then for the descendants. A secret to the Aries psyche is that as much as it likes to push through, to break out, to boldly go, it really likes to have a solid, stable base to push against which is not so available at the moment, globally speaking. This year Aries has to contend with opposition from Jupiter (what about justice?), conjunction with Uranus (how can we break through the stuck places together?), square to Pluto (who actually has the power?); and Saturn (what it means or why to bother with your personal best) not to mention Venus retrograde in Aries. You could say these are challenges to those born with the Sun in Aries but you could also say it’s a challenge for all of us, to consider how and what to protest and/or protect in a world where nature itself is unstuck in time.
March 23 & 24
Mercury opposite Jupiter, square Pluto
Jupiter squaring Pluto is one of the more demanding aspects of the year. Mercury in Aries comes along to remind us of that, even as the aspect between Jupiter and Pluto becomes exact for the second time on the 30th. Strong words as well as fierce and demanding ideas can challenge our way of life. Should we point and blame at the individuals who seem to be destroying so much that holds the world steady? Or should we see them as a manifestation, a symptom of something, some kind of chaos sweeping through civilization: A force to reckon with, to contain or even destroy. But not so much a bunch of rational people to reason with. Action speaks louder than words when things are falling apart. And sometimes things fall apart so they can come together in a new way. Ultimately. What can you do about it, with it, for it? How can you know your own mind in a world so bent on chaos? Ask the question and see what kind of response you get from the chaos itself. It’s that kind of week. And if you’re down a quart where hope is concerned try this.
Sun conjunct Venus retrograde
If you’ve been aware of the retrograde period of Venus then you might consider today to be the apex of the journey. Or rather the nadir. Mostly the story is told as a descent. What actually happens out there is that as Venus, the planet, appears to get nearer and nearer to the Sun her light diminishes and then disappears on account of the Sun’s great light. Nowhere on this planet can we see her. She will stay missing until March 30th. When she reappears she will have transformed as if by magic, from evening star in the west to morning star in the east. For the next nine months Venus will only be visible in the morning as she rises ahead of the Sun. As this transformation from evening to morning star completes itself we, who live beneath the bowl of heaven, are called to make effort, possibly great effort, toward that which has value for us. Do we even know what that is? Do we want more stuff or a better world? Do we even know what that looks like? This day, (actually from March 22 – 30), suggests a bold yet mystical energy at work, encouraging us to pay attention that we might receive some inspiration which could help us push through the stuck places or at least see what and where they are. It is not out of the question to feel despair or fear as the time for breakthrough approaches. If you would like to join Silver River for a labyrinth walk to honor the depths of Venus’ journey above and within us you can contact me or Silver River for more information. It is open to all.
Mercury conjunct Uranus
Look and listen for the flash of light in the darkness; the light bulb moment. Otherwise you’ll be askance at what you suddenly see.
New Moon: 7 degrees Aries: 10:57 PM EDT
Mars sextile Neptune
More tomorrow than today, this New Moon announces the arrival of spring. Out of a vast nothing comes a gazillion somethings; alive, creating the world; every blade of grass, every new-born bird, every thought and breath of life. It’s not like we have a choice about it; might as well get into the dance. The movement will do you good.
Mercury trine Saturn
Get serious. Reign in the scattered mind. The ability to focus on a subject is not the same as absorption in distraction. We all know how that works.
Jupiter square Pluto
We think when something happens, it happens all at once, like a blast from above or below. A moment in time. But what makes a moment? It’s more like threads in a tapestry, converging into pictures and diverging into backgrounds. It’s a constant interconnected dance of coming together and falling apart.
Jupiter first squared Pluto on November 24, 2016 and it will do it one more time on August 4th. But although the square is exact on those days as it is today, there have been indications, warnings, and bells ringing in the night. For example Mercury recently squared Pluto and opposed Jupiter on March 23 & 24th. And the Sun will do the same a few days before the full moon on April 11th. And again with Uranus a few days after. We can also observe that, both Jupiter and Pluto will be at the degree of the exact square March 25 – April 2. So the theme of Jupiter in Libra – the inclination toward righteous balance – challenging Pluto in Capricorn – the crumbling, transforming, rotting, regenerating power structures of this world (such as corporations, hierarchies, governments) is a big one at the moment. No surprise there. And what do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
Mercury enters Taurus
Mercury will retrograde in Taurus on April 9th. Mercury in Aires combines thinking and action. In Taurus it’s time to polish our creations, bringing them to a shine or if it seems right, to cut our losses, discard the useless and focus on what has more enduring value.
Venus (retrograde) enters Pisces
Somewhere on this planet, where the horizon is flat and the skies are clear, Venus has returned to the sky as morning star. Having undergone the death and rebirth of the conjunction with the Sun she returns, transformed and ready to work for the things that matter. As she finishes her retrograde journey we are challenged to do exactly that, no matter what obstacles or circumstances appear to block the way.
Mars trine Pluto
That which you do or think or feel right now gives rise to the next thing you will do, think or feel. This is how the world is created. Today was made for manifestation but you can only build it with the materials at hand. No regrets, get to work, knowing that how you live this very moment will create the next one.
Saturn stationery retrograde
Today may be the exact day of the station but Saturn has been at this particular degree (conjunct the Galactic Center) since March 7th and will remain there until May 8th. Our galaxy is the Milky Way; named for the cloudy trail of stars we see from earth. It seems to have reminded our ancestors of the milk from the breasts of the Great Goddess Hera trailing across the night sky. There is also the ancient Egyptian goddess Nut stretching across the same sky at night. Others imagined it as a Silver River to be traveled if you would journey to the pure land. The center of this goddess or river is a powerful place; rich with wisdoms that stretch us beyond the earthly ones we may think we have. I think of it as the dakini degree. Saturn is, of course, the planet of earthly circumstance. A kind of ‘this is this and that is that’ view of reality. We deal with it or we don’t but either way, it’s what is. There are many ways to interpret such a coming together of circumstance and mystery. My sense is that it has something to do with a kind of fierce compassion which is required for us to deal with a planet which is over populated, chaotically weathered, and politically unstable.
Sun opposite Jupiter
The challenge is not to make another person or group the target of your truth but rather to live it. To walk the road of truth and justice here and now. This very human process never ends.
Venus (retrograde) square Saturn
Sun square Pluto
Venus will be square Saturn today and again (after she goes direct) on April 21st; big astrological news. We can say we are under the influence of the Saturn/Venus square for the entire time. Saturn, moving slowly, is a ruthless reality checker; a gate keeper (see above). Our circumstances may have to do with international and national politics or/and the limits or practical realities of our own personal desires. Or both. Venus is considered to be exalted in Pisces: At her most beautiful and seductive. Given that she is in the morning star phase we could say she has an agenda. She wants a lot and she’s willing to do what she has to, to get it. But Saturn says, ‘there are limits, serious limits.’ This is about the factor of greed in all our lives. The want-our-cake-and-eat-it-too syndrome. Is it ethical to have more than we need? To wrap the world in plastic? To spend so much money on defense? To drive when we could ride?
The Sun square Pluto aspect underscores the seriousness of the issues. Tread carefully through the world of matter, money and circumstance. Especially if your wealth creates or sustains someone else’s poverty.
Mercury stationery retrograde
Here it comes again. Like clockwork. A heavenly reminder to listen, to learn, to clean up and out whatever needs cleaning. Especially those things of value that we are so attached to. Coming on the heels of Venus retrograde, about to go direct, it packs an added punch. The themes of value and matter remain front and center. It makes no sense to clean the plastic out of your house if it pollutes the planet. Mercury retrograde loves these kinds of conundrums. So we can too. Sometimes curiosity about a problem is more effective than an immediate solution. Mercury is retrograde until May 3.
Full Moon: 21 degrees Libra 02:08 AM EDT
There is a moment between inhaling and exhaling or the opposite: A moment so impossible to catch or hold onto, so incredibly mystical it’s hard to understand how we get up every morning and just do what we do, without offering deep reverence for the Mystery of Breath. Full Moons are like that: Moments of fleeting yet profoundly impossible awareness – gone before you can be sure it ever existed; excepting that you look up at the sky and there it is. Until it isn’t. And each one is unique. This one, sandwiched between the Sun square Pluto and the Sun conjunct Uranus is a call to challenge any and every thing. It’s not just the ‘why’ that needs to be challenged, but the ‘how’ as well. Not to mention the ‘who’. Maybe these are dangerous times but they are also meant to be fully lived. Right where you are.
Sun conjunct Uranus
You can’t expect the unexpected, so don’t even try. Rather open yourself up to the chaotic interplay of energies and let yourself be changed; possibly forever.
Venus stationery direct
It’s not the moment we have been waiting for or anything like that. Venus returned to the morning sky sometime after March 30 and has been climbing steadily in the eastern sky just before sunrise. Today underscores that; which is to say, if there is something you want, get going. Desire makes the world go ‘round. Sometimes it can be a good thing.
Venus sextile Mars
It’s not only a sextile but also a mutual reception. Mars is in Venus’ sign and Venus is in Mars’ sign. These planets of passion are totally into each other today. This could mean over indulging – the Easter Bunny wouldn’t mind. It could also mean that you are clearly aware of what you want and how to get it. The trick is in not objectifying the people around you: not making them into things and not using them as pieces on your personal chessboard.
Sun trine Saturn
If you’re in need of or just in the mood to do things competently, today’s your day as long as you respect the limits of matter.
