December 21: Winter Solstice
Sun enters Capricorn: 11:20 PM EST
Winter Solstice. Summer, down under. But Capricorn no matter how you slice it. Some years are more astrologically noteworthy than others. This is one of those years. For, let’s say 10,000 years Capricorn has been about hierarchy: The privilege and power that we accord those ‘at the top’. We marvel at their accomplishments and haven’t always seen how they keep the opportunities for themselves. We have been promised by the Great Religions that if we but worship the One God we will receive many blessings. We have forgotten, until recently to consider who that One God is. How it has actually worked is in a more ‘them that has, gets’. we have learned to blame people who are ill or live in poverty for their conditions. Capricorn has come through these twisted times with a reputation for greed and manipulation. But this is not the essential meaning of Capricorn.
- It is an earth sign (like Taurus and Virgo). It’s about real things.
- It’s a cardinal sign (like Aries, Libra and Cancer). It initiates the season of winter. It’s bossy and likes to manage.
- It’s a universal sign (like Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces). It is meant to initiate real things for the good of all’.
This year as the Sun travels through Capricorn it will meet up with Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto, thereby underscoring these Capricorn themes. Our job is to honestly consider(in all things) if we or those we are interdependent with are motivated by greed or sustainability. It’s not an easy train to turn around. We’ll be at it for a while …
Venus square Uranus
Mars sextile Pluto
Everything you think you do or don’t want, all the anticipation of gifts under the tree, takes us out of the presence and into presents. Our capacity for holy wonder and deep gratitude is easily hijacked. Even so we all feel at least a trace of wonder and thanks because, even in the longest, darkest moments we know without doubt that the light will return. We are profoundly part of the natural world even if we don’t tune into it. Stand by a tree as it falls into its winter sleep. Visit a lake and observe the Sun, riding across the sky at its lowest angle, as close to the horizon as it gets in the northern hemisphere. Winter has begun.
Sun trine Uranus
Sometimes we see the world from a different perspective. We think outside the box because, suddenly, we notice the box; it’s shape and size and how it fits together. Today was made for studying limitations, knowing that there will be breaking out beyond them after the New Moon on the 26th.
Peace to all. The Sun is, once again, gaining in light. And no matter what you are up to today, you are not alone. You are part of the Great Big Circle of Life that is our earth, Mother of us all.
New Moon: 4 degrees of Capricorn: 12:13 AM EST Eclipse
Some say the path of the eclipse is where we will see the changes it brings. You can find the path of this one here. Each of us has a true north on our inner compass. Set your new moon intention for the year in the direction that sustains your authenticity, not because you deserve it any more than anyone else, but because it would benefit your world. Capricorn style.
Sun conjunct Jupiter
Once a year the Sun conjuncts Jupiter (as it does each of the planets). Some say it is a blessing on our faith. Here we are, surrounded by all and nothing. Maybe today is a good day to reflect on what you really believe (Jupiter) in your heart (Sun).
Mercury enters Capricorn
Time to think about how things are built, what you have and will build as well as if there is a pecking order and where you fall in it and why. Mercury will conjunct Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto as it journeys through Capricorn.
Mercury square Chiron
Is it still true, like the song says, ‘When you lose, you lose alone”? Maybe not the way it used to be. We have become aware that those who fall, affect us all. It’s not enough to rely on the so-called social safety nets. We need to get personal about this.
Mercury trines Uranus
Chaos is scary but if we step away from the wreckage in our mind at least, we see that it is about change. And we are in sore need of change. We are the culture. We carry the change in the way we engage the chaos. We do this together.
December 31 – January 1
Good-bye 2019. A rambunctious year, full of stops and starts, lies and more lies and all manner of truths, sprouting everywhere. Confusions, delusions and visions.
As we say hello to 2020 we welcome the effort required to build and shape the change we cannot control.
Mars enters Sagittarius
If you’ve been looking for fire, for vision and inspiration for the new year you could turn to Mars which might mean going somewhere: on a journey or just out into nature. You could go for a swim!
Mars trine Chiron
If you’re into the wild make sure you have a good mentor; someone to learn from and be guided by. If you’re the guide, strive for wisdom as well as strength.
January 7 & 8
Sun sextile Neptune
Mercury sextile Neptune
Wherever you are, be open to the subtle inner currents of energy; how you feel as well as the feeling of a place or a group. There are so many levels at which we communicate with ourselves as well as the world surrounding us.
Full Moon: 20 degrees Cancer: 02:21 PM EST: Lunar Eclipse
Sun conjunct Mercury
Uranus stationery direct
Shine a light on your expectations for the year to come – even as you honor the simple truth that you cannot control events, timing or other people. That’s the thing about incarnated existence. We are thrown into a web of connections we did not created alone. The game is to participate, to be as fully alive as you can be, to do no harm and today, especially, to listen. Mercury casts its spell for us in mysterious ways when conjunct the Sun. Messages are everywhere, in everything. The world is always talking to us.
Mercury conjunct Saturn and Pluto
Saturn conjunct Pluto
A big, new day, today ushers in a 38 odd year cycle of Saturn and Pluto in conjunction. It’s been over 500 years since they conjoined in the sign of Capricorn. Are we present yet? Can we grapple with the nuts and bolts of our reality or are we allowing ourselves to be distracted because we just can’t bear what is really happening around us? It’s hard. Difficult. It’s meant to be. It’s not about getting it right or letting things fall. It’s about profound structural transformation. And each of us contains a world, a perspective, a notion of how it could be. When that notion is rooted in how things are we find it easier to get there from here.
Sun conjunct Saturn and Pluto
Venus enters Pisces
Yesterday’s news continues to unfold and today we get to wonder where beauty fits into change. Is anything truly functional if it’s not beautiful?
Venus sextile Uranus
Desire is a tricky fish. It can lock us into the prison of our small self, strengthening our sense of separateness and it can take us to ecstasy and the loosening of all earthly concerns. It fosters addiction as well as taking us to the threshold of liberation. You choose. There’s the rub.
Yesterday and tomorrow
The enemies of today.
holding me against my will; restless, agitated insecure
as I live into the dreamlike impossibility of Now.
Mercury enters Aquarius
Our culture lauds and applauds the rational, the scientific, the reasonable. It just does. So Mercury is well off here. Even so it will have some challenges being all by itself in the air element for the next while, save for the days when the moon joins it.
January 17 and 18
Mercury sextile Chiron and square Uranus
We are surrounded by opportunities to learn all about the effects of trauma as well as why a culture that considers itself so advanced perpetuates the causes of it. We learn best what we learn from experience. Where you find yourself struggling between the rock and the hard place you might relax and surrender to the situation, seeing what there is to learn. Cosmos and chaos. Implicate order meets the chasm of disorder. Uranus loves that.
