Humans have always projected themselves and life down here onto the heavens that we may better understand ourselves as part of the universe. ‘As above, so below’ as the saying goes. It is our mandate as humans to deal with symbols, to interpret, to make meaning of our experience.
Beneath our feet: the Earth, our mother. Have you ever stood upon this sacred Earth with the awareness that you are standing on the holy ground of your Great Mother? We are born from Her the way apples are born from apple trees. Each distinct and yet a recognized part of the tree.
Above us, in the heavens, the Milky Way. Have you ever stood beneath the vast, milky swath of stars on a dark summer’s night and taken it in? Is it even possible to do so? Some say this is the milk from the breasts of the Great Goddess (Hera). Others see the Eleven Million Mile High Dancer with her long hair and roller skates. Still others call the star-studded night sky Nut a nude goddess or possibly a cow feeding the world with milk. The Milky Way is an even greater mother than Earth. She is the Galactic Mother who gives birth to our solar system.
Between heaven and earth is the Sun; the heart of our world. Call it king or father. There is no mistaking that the Sun is the heart of the solar system; therefore a representation of the heart itself.
One day (modern astronomers cannot say precisely which day but this is not about precision. It’s a metaphor) : One day (once about every 25,800 years to be sort of precise), from our perspective here on Earth it appears that we are in perfect alignment with the Sun and the center of the Milky Way. You could theoretically stand on Earth and shoot an arrow through the heart of the Sun and have it arrive at the center of the Milky Way; our galactic center. The center of the Milky Way is the womb of the Galactic Mother.
The day of the winter solstice is the holiest of days. It is the day when the Sun, which is weak and almost dead, appears to stand still and then begins to climb back into the sky bringing more and more light as the year progresses. (For some speculation on Northern Southern Hemisphere realities go to ‘Insights for the Month of Sagittarius’ on this website. )
The all powerful Sun may be father to the earth but it is child to the heavens.
Here is the departure point where you must interpret for yourself what it means when the rich fertile ground of our being aligns through the heart of love itself to the womb of something so vast we can only be in awe. What will rise from the ashes of a 25,800 year old Great Year? What does it mean? Not just for the world but also for ME?
You might start by asking yourself if you think you actually choose to go along for this ride or whether you have already been chosen simply because you are here now!
